Counterfeit GW: the short answer

"GW" is the Casio G-Shock prefix for models with Tough Solar and Multi-Band 6 radio control. A counterfeit GW is a fake of that line, sold as new. Two features decide the case in minutes: a solar cell that holds charge and a receiver that syncs to an atomic clock signal. Fakes copy the dial text for both. They do not carry the hardware. Run a manual receive and watch the charge indicator. If the watch never shows RCVD or a rising charge level, it does not hold a GW module.

What the GW prefix covers

Casio uses GW on solar and radio G-Shock models, including the GW-M5610, GW-5000U, GW-6900 and GW-9400 Rangeman. US retail for the line runs about $150 to $300. Listings well below that range, from a seller with no return policy, are a main source of fakes.

Six checks that settle it

  1. Radio sync. Start a manual receive. A real module shows RCVD and sets the time from the atomic signal. A fake shows nothing, or shows RCVD on the display at all times.
  2. Tough Solar. Cover the dial for an hour, then check the charge level. A real cell holds. Fakes use a printed dial ring and a standard battery.
  3. Caseback. Look for a four digit module number, laser etched text and a flat back. The GW-M5610 carries module 3159. Fake backs show shallow stamping, a wrong font or no module code.
  4. Buttons and case. Count four buttons, check the recess depth and press each one. Real G-Shock buttons travel with a firm stop.
  5. Display. On a real GW the digits sit at a slight angle under the glass. Fakes show a flat LCD with weak contrast and a wide gap at the bezel edge.
  6. Papers. Real boxes carry a module manual, a warranty card with the Casio name and a serial label that matches the caseback.

Numbers to compare

Ask the seller for the model number, the module number and a caseback photo. Cross-check all three against the Casio spec page for that model. A GW-M5610 with a caseback that reads another module number is a fake or a parts watch. Casio does not run a public serial lookup for G-Shock, so a serial alone proves nothing.

Market context

US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports and mail hubs. The agency publishes seizure figures by commodity, and watches rank among the top seized goods. Sellers move stock through social apps and short-lived storefronts to avoid takedowns.

If you bought a fake

Stop the payment, file a dispute with the card issuer, and keep the listing, photos and chat log. Report the seller to the FTC and to StopFakes.gov. A return address in the US does not make the seller a US business.
