The short answer
If you are holding a steel Aquanaut and wondering whether it is real, look at the dial before anything else. The 5167A has an embossed checkerboard pattern stamped into the metal and then coated, and it catches light in a way flat printed replicas never manage. Most counterfeits fail right there, before you ever see a movement or a caseback. Everything after that is confirmation.
Where the fakes give themselves away
- Dial texture. The real grid has soft, rounded edges because it is stamped and finished. Copies are printed or lightly etched, so the squares look flat and a little gray under a phone light.
- Printing. "Patek Philippe" and "Aquanaut" should be thin, crisp and centered. Replica text tends to sit heavy, or drift a hair toward one side of the dial.
- Date window. The aperture on a genuine 5167A is cleanly cut with a flat polished frame. Fakes often show a visible step, or the date wheel sits too deep and shadows the numbers.
- Lume. Applied numerals and hands should glow evenly and fade at the same rate. Cheap copies glow unevenly, or glow the wrong color.
Case, bezel and the "1:1" claim
I hear "1:1 Swiss" constantly, and it means nothing. Look at the bezel: the genuine piece is satin brushed on top with polished flanks, and the transition between the two finishes is a hard, clean line. On most counterfeits the polish bleeds into the brushed surface and the bezel looks slightly soft at the edges. Lug bevels are a second tell. Genuine lugs have a consistent bevel that runs the full length; copies usually round off or skip it on the underside where nobody looks.

Movement and caseback
The 5167A runs the caliber 324 S C and shows it through a sapphire caseback, so a seller cannot hide the movement. A decorated clone can look busy from arm's length, but the bridge geometry, the rotor finish and the engraving depth are different once you compare side by side. Serial and reference numbers are engraved into a defined recess, not stamped on top of the metal. If the numbers look shallow or sit proud of the surface, stop there.

Strap and clasp
The composite Tropical strap is the part people overlook. Genuine straps have a matte, slightly rubbery hand feel and a clean cut at the lug end. Copies often smell like tire rubber and stiffen within weeks. The deployant clasp is another giveaway: engraving on a real one is deep and sharp, while replicas use stamped or laser-marked steel that wears smooth in months.
Fake Patek Philippe 5167A Watch Guide
Price is the whole tell
A steel 5167A trades far above its retail price on the secondary market, and it has held there for years because demand outran supply. Nobody sells a genuine one for a few hundred dollars. If the price is replica money, the watch is a replica. There is no exception to that rule, no distressed seller, no estate deal that beats it.
The legal side in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. Section 2320, and it carries real prison time for repeat sellers. CBP seizes counterfeit watch shipments at ports and mail facilities routinely, and the buyer usually loses both the watch and the money. Personal-use purchase carries lower risk than resale, but it is not risk-free. You get no warranty, no service from the brand, and no resale value outside the same gray market you bought from.
Buying a real one
Buy from an authorized dealer or a dealer who will hand over the full set: box, papers and service history. Ask for an Extract from the Archives from Patek Philippe, which confirms the reference, the movement number and the production date against factory records. A seller who resists that step is telling you something. Genuine sellers expect the question.
