Short answer
At the time of writing, Breguet's public catalog does not list a reference 5405. The Classique line uses numbers such as 5177, 7137, 7787 and 5717. Listings that carry the name "Breguet 5405" come from replica sellers. A watch sold with that number is a counterfeit or a watch with a wrong label. Confirm any reference number with Breguet before you pay.
Why the number 5405 shows up in replica ads
Counterfeit sellers reuse numbers that buyers cannot check. Some take a real Breguet reference and change one digit. Some invent a number and attach it to a photo of a genuine watch. Replica listings described as a 5405 often show a date window and a 38 mm to 40 mm case. Breguet does not publish a model that matches that set of traits.
Signs of a counterfeit Breguet
- Guilloche dial that is stamped or printed. On a real Breguet the pattern is cut into the dial and the lines meet at the center.
- Hands. Breguet uses heat-blued steel. Copies use painted blue metal that shows a flat tint under light.
- Case metal. Many copies use gold plated brass or steel. Weight is the fast test. An 18k gold case of 39 mm weighs far more than a plated case of the same size.
- Rotor and bridges. Engraving on a copy has wrong fonts, missing accents or a "Swiss Made" line at the wrong angle.
- Serial number. Real Breguet watches carry a number that the brand can match against its records.
- Papers and box. Print errors, wrong paper stock, and a certificate that does not match the serial.
Steps to verify a watch
- Ask the seller for the full reference number and the serial number.
- Contact Breguet with both numbers and ask for a record check.
- Weigh the watch and compare the result with the published spec for that model.
- Have a watchmaker open the caseback. Genuine Breguet movements are built in the brand's own workshops. Most copies use Seagull, Hangzhou or decorated ETA base movements.
- Check the hallmarks and the caseback engraving under a loupe.
- Ask for a service record from Breguet or an authorized dealer.
Price checks
Breguet Classique watches sell at retail in the five figure range in US dollars. Tourbillon and perpetual calendar models cost more. Offers at a few hundred dollars, or a few thousand, do not match the market. A low price is the strongest single signal.
Legal position in the United States
Counterfeit watches infringe registered trademarks. 18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. Penalties reach 10 years in prison and fines of $2,000,000 for an individual and $5,000,000 for a business.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit goods at the border. A buyer who imports a counterfeit watch can lose the item and the money. Swiss brands record their trademarks with CBP to support those seizures.
