Short answer

A fake Cartier Tank Must with a red dial is a counterfeit watch, not a Cartier reference. Cartier's 2021 steel Tank Must line uses silvered opaline dials. Red shows up on the leather strap range and on the vintage Must de Cartier lacquer dials from the 1970s and 1980s. Possession alone is not a federal crime, but import and sale are, under 19 U.S.C. § 1526 and 18 U.S.C. § 2320.

What the genuine watch is

  • Case: stainless steel. Large model 33.7 x 25.5 mm. Small model 29.5 x 22 mm.
  • Movement: quartz. The SolarBeat version runs on a photovoltaic cell under the dial that charges a battery.
  • Crystal: sapphire. Crown: steel with a blue synthetic spinel cabochon.
  • Dial: silvered opaline, Roman numerals, blued-steel sword hands.
  • Water resistance: 30 m on steel models. Strap: leather or steel, with red among the leather colors.
  • New retail: about $3,000 to $3,600 USD for steel models, by year and size.

Red dial claims

The Must de Cartier range from 1977 used vermeil cases and colored lacquer dials, red included. Those are vintage references with a different case, movement, and logo. A modern steel Tank Must with a factory red dial does not appear in Cartier's published Tank Must lineup. Cartier does not publish a public serial lookup, so a seller's claim about a red dial reference cannot be checked from the number alone. Ask Cartier after-sales service to confirm the reference before you accept any red dial claim.

How counterfeit listings read

Sellers use "1:1," "super clone," "AAA," and "Swiss quartz." Those words describe a copy, not a Cartier product. Tells seen on counterfeit Tank Must watches:

  • Mineral glass in place of sapphire.
  • Dial text with thick or uneven strokes. Genuine lettering sits sharp against the opaline grain.
  • Caseback engraving with a wrong font, a wrong WSTA reference, or one serial number reused across listings.
  • A cabochon made of glass or dyed plastic. Glass shows bubbles under a loupe.
  • Lower weight. Counterfeit midcases are brass with plating or low-grade steel.
  • Boxes and cards sold in bulk on the resale market, so papers carry little weight on their own.

Price and legal exposure

Counterfeit Tank Must listings run about $50 to $400 USD. New genuine steel models run about $3,000 to $3,600 USD. Trafficking in counterfeit goods carries up to 10 years in prison for a first offense under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. CBP seizes counterfeit watches at ports and mail hubs, and the personal-use exemption in 19 U.S.C. § 1526 does not cover counterfeit marks. A single ordered watch can be seized and destroyed.

Checks before you buy

  1. Get the reference number and the caseback serial in writing.
  2. Ask Cartier after-sales service to verify the serial.
  3. Have a watchmaker open the case and check the movement. A quartz Tank steps once per second.
  4. Measure the case with a caliper: 33.7 x 25.5 mm on the Large.
  5. Inspect the cabochon under a loupe.

If a seller refuses any of these steps, the answer is no.
