The pick
Used IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII, ref. IW327001
The Mark XVIII has a 40 mm steel case, calibre 35111, 42 hours of power reserve and a sapphire crystal with antireflective coating on both faces. Water resistance is 60 m. IWC stopped the Mark XVIII in 2024 and moved to the Mark XX.
Retail on the last Mark XVIII was about $5,250. Clean used examples sold for about $3,500 to $4,500 in 2024. A serial number check at IWC confirms the case and the movement. Service runs about $400 to $700.
This is the pick because the watch keeps value, takes a service, and ships with papers a buyer can check.
The options
1. Steinhart Nav B-Uhr 44
A 44 mm steel case with an ETA 2824-2 base movement and a sapphire crystal. Price is about $650. Size is the tradeoff: 44 mm sits wide on a 7 in wrist. Lug width is 22 mm.
Fake IWC Watches Compared to Genuine Ones
2. Laco Augsburg 39
39 mm case, Miyota 821A automatic, mineral crystal on the base model. About $430. Lowest entry price of the four. The Miyota runs at 21,600 vph and does not hack.
3. Stowa Flieger Klassik 40
40 mm case, Sellita SW200-1 or ETA 2824-2 depending on stock, sapphire crystal. About $1,100. Stowa has built flieger-style watches since the 1930s and engraves the case number on the back.
4. Sinn 556 I
38.5 mm case, Sellita SW200-1, 200 m water resistance, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown. About $1,600. The case comes from Sinn in Frankfurt.
What counterfeit Mark XVIII listings get wrong
- Movement. Most fakes run a Miyota 9015 or a Chinese copy of the 2892. No parts from IWC, no service from IWC.
- Dial. Fakes use printed numerals. The Mark XVIII dial carries applied metal numerals and a framed date at 3.
- Case. Case thickness on fakes runs 0.5 mm to 1 mm off. Spring bars differ from the IWC part.
- Papers. No serial in the IWC database, no warranty card that matches the case.
Legal and shipping facts
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the US. CBP seizes parcels and sends a notice. The buyer gets no refund from the seller and no watch. Resale value on a counterfeit sits near zero, and no watchmaker stocks parts for it.
Bottom line
A used Mark XVIII holds about 70 percent of retail after five years. The four options hold less. Buy the used IWC if the budget reaches $3,500. Buy the Laco or the Steinhart if it does not.
