The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M is one of the most copied dive watches. Fakes sell from $80 for a quartz model to $700 for a "super clone" with an automatic movement. None of them match the genuine watch. The real Planet Ocean carries METAS Master Chronometer certification, a 600 meter water resistance rating, and a Co-Axial movement with a silicon balance spring.
Genuine specs to check first
- Water resistance: 600 m / 2,000 ft. The helium escape valve sits at 10 o'clock.
- Movement: Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 8900 on the 43.5 mm and 45.5 mm refs, calibre 8800 on the 39.5 mm ref.
- Certification: METAS Master Chronometer. The test includes exposure to a 15,000 gauss magnetic field and a daily rate of 0/+5 seconds.
- Case back: sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides. Serial number engraved on the case back and on the movement.
- Dial: ceramic on most refs. Bezel insert: ceramic, with Liquidmetal numerals on some refs.
- Case sizes: 39.5 mm, 43.5 mm, 45.5 mm.
Replica tells
- Solid case back with a printed Seahorse. Genuine 8900 and 8800 movements show through sapphire.
- Movement is a Miyota 8215, a Seagull ST2130, or an ETA 2824 clone. These beat at 21,600 or 28,800 vph and have no Co-Axial escapement.
- Date font and window shape differ from the genuine dial print.
- Bezel markers do not align with the dial indexes.
- Lume fades inside 20 minutes. Genuine dials use Super-LumiNova.
- Helium escape valve does not turn, or has no threaded crown.
- Engraving on the case back and crown logo is shallow and filled with paint.
Price gap and law
A genuine Planet Ocean 600M on a steel bracelet lists between about $6,000 and $7,500 USD, based on reference and year. A replica costs $80 to $700. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments under 19 U.S.C. 1526. Trafficking carries penalties under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Resale has no legal market, and authorized service centers refuse replica work.
Verification steps
- Open the case back with a watchmaker. Compare the movement finish, rotor engraving, and balance wheel against published 8900 or 8800 photos.
- Check the serial at the 7 o'clock lug against the movement serial. The numbers match on genuine watches.
- Measure the case with calipers. Fakes run 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm off the listed diameter.
- Time the watch over 24 hours. A Master Chronometer holds 0/+5 seconds per day. Most replicas drift 10 to 30 seconds.
Omega does not run a public serial number database. A service request through an authorized dealer or a Swatch Group service center remains the only reliable check.
