Quick answer

A fake Portugieser Tourbillon is a replica of an IWC Portugieser with a tourbillon. Most replicas sold under that name do not have a tourbillon. They show an open balance wheel through a dial cutout and call it a tourbillon. A real tourbillon puts the balance wheel and escapement inside a rotating cage. The cage turns 360 degrees once per minute. Chinese-made tourbillon movements exist, so a working replica is possible. Expect to pay $700 to $1,800 for one. Genuine IWC Portugieser tourbillon references list from about $50,000 and up.

What the genuine watch is

IWC builds three Portugieser tourbillon families: the Tourbillon Hand-Wound, the Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph, and the Constant-Force Tourbillon. Case metals include platinum, rose gold, and white gold. Case sizes sit near 42 mm to 43 mm. The tourbillon sits at 6 o'clock or 9 o'clock, depending on reference. Production is small. Some editions are limited to 50 or 150 pieces.

IWC services these watches and can check a serial number against its records.

Price tiers for replicas

  • $80 to $250. Open-heart dial. No tourbillon. Movement is a Chinese automatic with a stamped plate.
  • $250 to $500. Better case finish, sapphire crystal, closer dial printing. Still no tourbillon.
  • $700 to $1,800. Real Chinese tourbillon movement, often from Tianjin Seagull or a Guangzhou assembler. The cage rotates once per minute. Case is steel with gold plating.
  • $2,000 and up. Rare. A few sellers fit a modified Swiss ebauche or a higher-grade Chinese tourbillon with better finishing.

Note the gap. A bare Chinese tourbillon movement costs several hundred dollars wholesale. A watch with a working tourbillon at $200 does not exist.

How to check a tourbillon in 60 seconds

  1. Watch the cutout for one full minute. A tourbillon cage turns 360 degrees. A balance wheel swings back and forth and does not rotate.
  2. Look for the escape wheel and pallet fork inside the cage. A decorated plate holds no moving gear train.
  3. Find the seconds. On a tourbillon with small seconds, the hand sits on the cage. The cage index lines up with the seconds track.
  4. Check the beat. Most tourbillons run at 3 Hz to 4 Hz, so the balance swings 6 to 8 times per second.
  5. Weigh it. Platinum has a density of 21.4 g/cm3. Steel is 7.9 g/cm3. A platinum look-alike in steel feels light for its size.

Materials and finish

Replica cases are 316L steel or brass. Plating runs 3 to 5 microns of gold on most models and wears through at the lugs and caseback edges. Genuine Portugieser tourbillons use solid platinum, rose gold, or white gold. Dial printing, hands, and strap quality differ. The replica carries a generic calf or rubber strap. IWC uses alligator or rubber with a signed buckle.

Legal status in the US

Importing counterfeit goods into the United States is illegal, and personal use is not an exception. 18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets US Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy shipments. CBP also can issue civil penalties. A movement marked Swiss made inside a replica is a mislabeled part, and the mark does not match the Swiss Made rules.

What a replica cannot copy

The IWC 98900 family and the constant-force module have no replica equivalent. The constant-force tourbillon holds a remontoir spring and feeds even torque to the escapement. No replica maker sells that. Movement finishing on a replica comes from a stamped plate. Resale value is zero. IWC will not service a counterfeit watch.
