Short answer

A "no date" Rolex is the Submariner with no date window and no cyclops: references 14060, 14060M, 114060, and 124060. It is one of the most copied watches around, and the copies fail in the same handful of places every time: the crown's click positions, the dial text, the lug shape, and the rehaut engraving. If something is sold as a 1:1 super clone of a no-date Sub, assume the outside is close and the movement is a Chinese or ETA-style caliber that Rolex never built.

What "no date" actually refers to

The no-date Submariner is the cleanest dial in the line. Four lines of text sit under the coronet, no aperture at 3 o'clock, and the movement has no date complication at all. That last part matters more than shoppers realize.

  • 14060 (1989 to roughly 1999): 40 mm case, caliber 3000, aluminum bezel insert, tritium dials marked "SWISS - T < 25," drilled lugs.
  • 14060M (1999 to 2012): same case, caliber 3000 until about 2007 and then caliber 3130, Super-LumiNova dials marked "SWISS MADE," still drilled lugs.
  • 114060 (2012 to 2020): 40 mm "maxi" case with fatter lugs, ceramic Cerachrom bezel, caliber 3130, 48-hour reserve, solid lugs, Glidelock clasp.
  • 124060 (2020 to now): 41 mm case with slimmer lugs than the 114060, caliber 3230, 70-hour reserve, ceramic bezel.

Why the no-date model is a different kind of fake

With no date wheel to hide, the counterfeit has fewer places to cheat, so builders lean on the case and the movement instead. Genuine no-date Subs use no-date calibers: 3000, 3130, or 3230. Almost every fake uses a donor movement that has a date function the dial doesn't show. That single choice shows up in ways you can feel without opening the case.

The checks I would run first

Crown positions

Unscrew the crown and count. A genuine no-date Sub has two working positions: winding, then time setting. A fake built on a date movement often has a dead middle click, a date change that spins behind a blank dial, or a stem that feels gritty because the crown and tube are mismatched. The click should be crisp and the hand should hack cleanly at the second position.

Dial and rehaut

The 114060 and 124060 have "ROLEX" repeated around the inner rehaut, with the coronet at 12 and the letters lined up under the hour markers. On good fakes the engraving is often too shallow, too wide, or rotated a degree or two off the markers. The print itself should be crisp and slightly raised; on copies it tends to look flat, chalky, or too thick. The coronet's five points should be sharp and even, not rounded and blobby.

Case and lugs

The 14060 and 14060M have drilled lugs, so you can see through-holes on the case sides. The 114060 and 124060 do not. A fake that mixes these eras is an easy catch. Look at the lug profile too: the 114060 has thick, squared lugs, while the 124060 tapers thinner. Copies frequently split the difference and end up with something that matches neither reference.

Bracelet, end links, and weight

The 14060 and 14060M use hollow end links and a stamped flip-lock clasp. The 114060 and 124060 use solid end links and a Glidelock clasp. Solid links on an "14060M" or hollow ones on an "114060" are both wrong. Old slimmer cases also feel lighter on the wrist than the modern references, and the bracelet should sit flush against the case with no gap at the end links.

Crystal and serial

Submariners from around 2002 on carry a laser-etched coronet at 6 o'clock on the crystal, visible under a loupe at an angle. From roughly 2011 the serial moved to the inner rehaut at 6 o'clock and became scrambled, which means a watch claiming a 2015 build with a clean G-series number is off. Older 14060 models carry the serial between the lugs at 12 o'clock.

What the price tells you

No-date Subs trade in the high four figures to low five figures on the secondary market, and the newer ceramic references sit at the top of that range. Anyone offering a "Swiss made" 124060 for a few hundred dollars is selling a replica, regardless of the wording in the listing. "Swiss super clone" is a marketing label, not a manufacturing standard, and no factory publishes tolerances for it.

The legal side, plainly

In the United States, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, with penalties that reach 10 years for a first offense. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at the border, and the importer loses both the watch and the money. Buying one for yourself is not the same charge as selling, but the goods remain unlawful to import and the trademark owner can still pursue a civil claim. Passing a fake off as genuine adds fraud on top of that.

Bottom line

The no-date Submariner is simple enough that the errors are easy to find once you know the reference dates. Check the crown positions, compare the lugs and drilled holes against the correct reference, and look hard at the rehaut and crystal. If a deal looks far below market, the watch is the reason.
