A fake Rolex platinum watch can match the dial, the case shape, and the bracelet, but it cannot match the metal. Rolex builds its platinum references from a 950 platinum alloy, and that alloy has a density near 21.45 grams per cubic centimeter against about 8 for stainless steel. Weight is the first tell. If a seller offers a "platinum" Day-Date or Daytona at replica prices, the case is steel, plated brass, or steel loaded with tungsten.

What 950 platinum does that a replica cannot
Density
Platinum sits near the top of the density table for watch metals. A platinum case and bracelet carry close to three times the mass of the same geometry in steel, and about 1.4 times the mass of 18k gold. That mass is why platinum watches feel cold and heavy in the hand, and why replica makers add tungsten weights or caseback inserts.
Color
Platinum is grayer and duller than rhodium-plated white gold. It does not turn yellow when plating wears through, because there is no plating. A replica with a rhodium flash will show yellow or pink metal at the lug edges, the clasp, and the crown after a few months of wear.
Hallmarks
Rolex marks platinum cases with a 950 or PT950 stamp. On many references the mark sits on the inner caseback or on the case between the lugs, so a watchmaker has to open the watch to show it. - Compare the dial against the reference. Ice blue is a platinum-only dial on the Daytona and on most platinum Day-Date builds, so a silver or champagne dial on a claimed platinum piece is a question mark.
- Study the metal at the lug tips, crown, and clasp under daylight. Plating wear shows as a color change at those high-contact points.
- Run an XRF test at a jeweler. The readout states the alloy percentages and the test does not damage the case.
- Confirm the serial and the reference with an authorized Rolex service center before money changes hands.
What replica makers use instead of platinum
Most platinum replicas are 316L or 904L stainless steel with a PVD or rhodium finish. Heavier versions hide a tungsten alloy ring or caseback insert to raise the number on a scale. Plated brass and zinc alloy appear in cheap builds and fail at the crown and clasp within months. None of these metals hold the density of a 95 percent platinum alloy, and none of them read as platinum under XRF.
Price reality check
The platinum content alone in a platinum Rolex case and bracelet is worth several thousand dollars at metal prices. Genuine platinum references sell in the tens of thousands of dollars. An offer at replica pricing is a steel watch with a platinum label, and a seller who claims otherwise is misrepresenting the goods.
