Answer: a fake Speedmaster Cal 321 is a counterfeit case, dial, and movement that copies the outside of an Omega Speedmaster. It does not hold an Omega or Lemania 321. The real 321 is a column wheel chronograph with a horizontal clutch that runs at 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz, 5 beats per second). Lemania built it for Omega. Omega used it in the Speedmaster from 1957 to 1968, then restarted production in a workshop in Biel in 2019. Counterfeit makers fit Seagull ST19 movements or Chinese copies of the later Lemania 1861. Which movement sits inside a given fake is often not public. A watchmaker can confirm it in minutes.

What Calibre 321 is

Lemania based the 321 on its 27 CHRO C12. The movement has a column wheel, a horizontal clutch, no date, and a rate of 18,000 vph. Omega put it in the Speedmaster CK2915 in 1957 and kept it through the 145.012 in 1968. The calibre 861 replaced it that year. The 861 uses a cam in place of a column wheel and runs at 21,600 vph. Omega restarted 321 output in 2019: a platinum Speedmaster first, then Canopus Gold and stainless steel versions. One watchmaker assembles each 321. Output is low.

Movement checks

  • Beat rate. A real 321 beats 5 times per second (18,000 vph). ST19 based watches beat 6 times per second (21,600 vph). A timing app on a phone reads this.
  • Bridge layout and finish. Genuine 321 bridges have a set shape and engraving. Copies show cast or laser text with soft edges.
  • Column wheel. The ST19 also has a column wheel, so the part alone proves nothing. Find it, then check the beat rate.
  • Serial and markings. Vintage 321 movements carry the Omega symbol, "321", and a serial number. Font and depth change from copy to copy.

Case and dial checks

  • Caseback text. Compare font weight, spacing, and the Seahorse. Engraving on counterfeits is shallow or double struck.
  • Pushers and crown. Real pushers have a set length and thread pitch. Copies sit long or wobble.
  • Dial. Subdial spacing, dot size, and lume color are hard to copy. Flat lume with no grain is a warning.
  • Serial range. A serial outside the range for the reference points to a fake or a watch built from mixed parts.

Price and records

Vintage 321 Speedmasters sell for $10,000 and up. Movement, case, and dial parts sell for thousands on their own. Omega's revived 321 watches list in the five figures, with the platinum version above $60,000. A listing at $500 to $2,000 for a "321" Speedmaster is a counterfeit or a build from spare parts. Papers, service invoices, and an Omega Extract of the Archives add proof of origin.

What photos do not show

Photos do not show beat rate, weight, or the reset of the chronograph. Ask the seller for a video of the chronograph start, stop, and reset, a timing machine printout, and a photo of the movement with the caseback off. A refusal is reason to walk away. No single test proves a watch. Use two or three checks, then have a watchmaker open the case.
