The short answer
Cartier put the Tortue into its Privé collection in 2023. The watch has a barrel case with four curved lugs, a shape Louis Cartier drew in 1912. Two versions shipped: a two-hand model and a monopusher chronograph, each in platinum and 18k rose gold, in numbered runs. Replica versions sold as "1:1" copy the outline, not the movement. Most use a quartz module or a generic automatic calibre. Cartier does not service them, and resale value is close to zero. Counterfeit sales are illegal in the United States.
What the 2023 Cartier Privé Tortue is
The Privé line reissues archive Cartier shapes in small runs. The Tortue was the seventh chapter of that series. Cartier showed the watches in March 2023 at Watches and Wonders in Geneva.
- Case shape: barrel, rounded sides, four curved lugs. Tortue is French for tortoise.
- Time-only case: 41.4 mm long, 32.9 mm wide, 7.2 mm thick. Figures reported by press samples in 2023.
- Chronograph case: 43.7 mm by 34.8 mm, 10.7 mm thick, reported.
- Metals: 950 platinum and 18k rose gold.
- Movement, time-only: calibre 430 MC, manual wind, 21,600 vph, about 38 hours of reserve.
- Movement, chronograph: calibre 1928 MC, manual wind, one pusher at 4 o'clock.
- Dial: silvered opaline, Roman numerals, blued steel sword hands, sapphire cabochon in the crown.
Edition sizes reported at launch: 200 pieces per metal for the time-only, 50 per metal for the chronograph. Confirm current figures with Cartier.
How replica Tortue 2023 watches differ
Round cases hide flaws. A barrel case with curved lugs does not.
- Case thickness. Copies often run 1 mm to 2 mm thicker to fit a generic movement.
- Lug curve. Genuine lugs wrap the wrist. Copies sit flat.
- Movement. Genuine is manual wind. Many copies are quartz, or automatic with a date window the genuine does not have.
- Crystal. Sapphire on the genuine. Some copies use mineral glass, which scratches.
- Dial print. Copies show soft edges and uneven spacing on the numerals.
- Caseback. Genuine engraving is cut deep. Copies use shallow etching.
- Weight. Platinum runs 20.7 g/cm3, steel runs 7.9 g/cm3. A steel copy sold as platinum feels light in the hand.
Price facts
Cartier listed the Privé Tortue in the five-figure USD range at launch. Replica listings run from about $70 for quartz models to $600 and higher for a so-called super clone with a decorated manual movement. No replica carries a Cartier calibre. Cartier service centers reject counterfeit watches, so repairs go to a third party. Secondhand demand for a copy is near zero.
Legal position in the US
Counterfeit goods are illegal in the United States. 18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit marks, with a first-offense maximum of 10 years and fines up to $2,000,000 for an individual. 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets US Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy counterfeit imports. CBP seizes thousands of watches each year. A buyer who orders from an overseas seller risks seizure with no refund and no legal recourse.
Alternatives
Cartier sells the genuine Tortue through boutiques and its own site when stock allows. Homage brands sell barrel cases without the Cartier name. A used genuine Cartier Tank or Santos costs less than a Privé Tortue and keeps value.
