"Hippocampus" is collector shorthand for the seahorse medallion on the back of an Omega Seamaster. Five tells that matter more than listing photos
- Caseback medallion. On solid-back references the seahorse is stamped in relief. On display-back versions it sits on the rotor or the ring around the movement. Replica stamping is shallow, the fins blur together, and the text ring runs thin in places.
- Bezel insert. Genuine 2015 Planet Ocean bezels used ceramic with a Liquidmetal dive scale on several references. Copies used printed or painted scales that sit too flat and lose the sharp edge on the numerals.
- Crown and valve. The Planet Ocean helium escape valve at 10 o'clock should sit flush and thread cleanly. Fakes often sit proud, and the crown guards come out thicker than the case lines.
- Dial texture. The Aqua Terra teak deck lines should be crisp and evenly spaced. On copies the grooves wash out near the date window, and the applied logo tilts.

If a seller claims a Swiss ETA inside a 2015 Seamaster copy, ask for a movement photo with the caseback off. That claim was common and rarely true.
What these sell for
Old 2015-era reps trade between $80 and $250 depending on condition and which model they copy. Modern super clones cost two to three times that and beat them on every measurement. Paying super clone money for 2015 stock is the most common mistake I see.
Buying notes
- Ask for the reference number the copy is based on, then compare case diameter and lug width against published specs.
- Request photos in daylight, not studio light. AR coating tint and dial texture show up better.
- Skip anything sold as "NOS 2015 stock." Replicas were not warehoused that way.
- Budget for a service or a movement swap. Ten-year-old clone movements are due for one.
Treat the phrase as a category label, not a quality promise. It tells you the era and the target model. Everything else you have to verify yourself.
