Answer
IW371482 is an IWC reference code in the Portugieser Chronograph line. A replica IW371482 is a counterfeit copy of that watch. IWC does not make it. Sellers use the code to match a copy to one dial, hand and strap combination. The genuine watch has a 41 mm stainless steel case, a two-register chronograph dial and cal. 79350, an ETA/Valjoux 7750 base. Copies use third-party movements, in most cases an Asian 7750 or a Swiss ETA 7750.
How the IWC reference code works
IWC uses six digits. The first four name the model family. The last two name the variant. 3714 is the Portugieser Chronograph. 82 is the dial, hand and strap set for that variant. IWC does not publish a free online decoder for every two-digit suffix. The exact factory finish for 371482 needs a check against an IWC catalog, an IWC boutique or a documented auction record. A seller who shows a dial that does not match the reference has a mismatch.
Genuine specs, ref. 3714 family
- Case: stainless steel, 41 mm wide, 13.1 mm thick
- Crystal: sapphire, antireflective coating on two sides
- Water resistance: 3 bar, about 30 m
- Dial: two subdials, 30-minute chronograph counter at 12, small seconds at 6, no date
- Numerals: applied Arabic, leaf hands
- Movement: cal. 79350, automatic, ETA/Valjoux 7750 base, 28,800 vph, about 44 h power reserve
- Strap: alligator leather, steel pin buckle or folding clasp
IWC replaced this family with ref. 3716 in 2019 and later. Ref. 3716 uses cal. 69355, an in-house column-wheel movement with a 46 h power reserve. The two generations share the case size and dial layout. The movement is the main difference.
How copies are built
- Case: 316L or 904L steel, CNC machined, 0.1 mm to 0.3 mm off spec in most cases
- Crystal: sapphire on higher grades, mineral glass on low grades
- Movement: Asian 7750, a decorated clone, or a Swiss ETA 7750
- Dial: printed numerals in place of applied numerals, subdial spacing that can sit off center
- Strap: calf leather stamped to look like alligator
The movement is a weak test. Gen cal. 79350 is a 7750 base, and so are most copies. Case thickness, subdial position and dial print separate the two. A caliper and a loupe do more work than a photo set.
Legal status in the US
Counterfeit watches are illegal to sell or traffic in the United States. 18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. The Lanham Act gives trademark owners a civil claim. US Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy shipments. A buyer who imports a counterfeit for personal use faces seizure of the item. Sellers who advertise "1:1 Swiss super clone" IWC watches commit a federal offense.
Price gap
Genuine Portugieser Chronograph steel models list near $8,000 at retail and trade in the $5,000 to $7,000 range on the secondary market. Copies sell for a small fraction of that. The gap is the tell. No seller moves a genuine 41 mm IWC chronograph at a copy price.
