Short answer

Replica IWC Da Vinci watches exist, and the supply is thin. Copyists target models with high sales volume. Rolex Submariner, Datejust and Daytona replicas fill that demand. The Da Vinci line sits behind IWC's Pilot and Portugieser lines in the counterfeit market. Most copies follow the 2017 Da Vinci design. The 1985 Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar has no credible copy. Trafficking in counterfeit watches is a federal crime in the United States.

What the Da Vinci line is

IWC introduced the Da Vinci in 1969. The first references used the Beta 21 quartz movement, a joint Swiss project. In 1985 IWC released the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar, reference 3750. Kurt Klaus designed the calendar module. It shows the date, day, month, moon phase and a four digit year. The owner sets all of it through the crown.

IWC relaunched the line in 2017 with round cases. Three families came from that release. The Da Vinci Automatic 36 measures 36 mm. The Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36 measures 36 mm. The Da Vinci Chronograph measures 42 mm. A Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph at 43 mm followed.

What a copy does and does not copy

Copies cluster on the stainless steel Automatic 36 and the Chronograph. Both are simple dial layouts. Movements inside copies are Miyota, Seagull or decorated clones of ETA and Sellita calibers. Genuine Automatic 36 watches use caliber 35111. Genuine 2017 Chronograph watches use caliber 89361, a flyback chronograph with two counters. A copy can match the dial. It does not match the movement architecture.

The Perpetual Calendar Chronograph uses caliber 89630 and a module with more than 400 parts. No replica maker ships a working equivalent.

Checks on a Da Vinci

  • Case diameter. The Automatic 36 is 36 mm. The Chronograph is 42 mm. Copies run larger.
  • Case back. Genuine steel models carry engraved reference and serial numbers. Edges are sharp.
  • Dial. IWC uses applied indices and a thin printed wordmark. Copies show heavy text and flat markers.
  • Moon phase. The disc advances once per 29.53 days. Copies use a 24 hour disc.
  • Crystal. Sapphire with antireflective coating on both faces. Copies use mineral glass or coating on one face.
  • Water resistance. IWC rates the Automatic 36 at 3 bar. Copies print the same dial text with no seal behind it.

"Swiss made" claims

Listings for copies use terms such as "Swiss made" and "1:1." IWC manufactures in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Counterfeit watches are assembled in China, Hong Kong and other locations. The dial text does not match the assembly site. A "Swiss made" stamp on a copy is a claim, not a fact.

Legal status in the United States

18 U.S.C. § 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal offense. A first conviction carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports and destroys them. Trademark owners can bring civil claims against sellers under the Lanham Act.
